Celebrating Día de los Muertos at iQLA
A Virtual Ofrenda Brings Tradition and Connection to iQ
Honoring culture and tradition has always been at the heart of our educational philosophy. This Día de los Muertos, we were thrilled to host our second annual virtual ofrenda to foster a meaningful connection to cultural heritage and build a sense of belonging within our diverse community.
Honoring Culture in a Virtual Space
Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a vibrant Mexican tradition celebrated each year on November 1st and 2nd. It’s a time to remember and honor those who have passed away, often through creating ofrendas, or altars, decorated with photos, candles, flowers, and the deceased’s favorite foods. Although commonly associated with Mexican culture, Día de los Muertos has become a symbol of remembrance embraced by people of many backgrounds. This inclusiveness made it the perfect tradition for our diverse student body, many of whom might not have the opportunity to engage in cultural celebrations in a traditional school setting.
Building Connections Across Cultures
Through our virtual ofrenda, students and staff contributed photos, stories, and mementos, creating a collaborative online altar that reflected a tapestry of cultures, memories, and personal experiences. The response was overwhelmingly positive, with many participants sharing their heartfelt tributes. The event highlighted the importance of having a space within our school that reflected the cultural diversity of our community.
The virtual ofrenda was about more than just honoring the past; it was about building empathy, understanding, and respect across cultures. When students saw their family traditions reflected in the school experience, it reinforced the idea that they—and their backgrounds—are truly valued. iQ Academy remains dedicated to creating a culturally responsive learning environment where every student feels their heritage is recognized and respected.
Why Culturally Responsive Teaching Matters
At iQ Academy, culturally responsive teaching is central to our mission. By integrating traditions like Día de los Muertos into our curriculum and events, we build an inclusive environment where every student’s background is recognized and celebrated. This inclusive approach was especially important in a virtual setting, where fostering a sense of community requires creative, intentional effort.
School Culture and Climate Coordinator Erin Wiebe, Ed.D. explains: “Honoring culture and tradition through our virtual ofrenda is about more than celebration; it’s a way for students to see themselves in their learning. When we celebrate traditions like Día de los Muertos, we create a space where students feel valued and connected to a shared community. It’s through recognizing and honoring each other’s heritage that we build empathy and inclusion.”
Celebrating Culture, Building Community
Día de los Muertos was more than just a cultural event at iQ Academy—it was a reminder of our commitment to promote an educational environment that respects and honors every student’s background. We hope to instill a sense of pride, empathy, and understanding that extends beyond the classroom, where students and staff can be a part of an experience to celebrate who they are and the heritage they bring to our school. At iQ Academy, we reflect on another meaningful Día de los Muertos and the strong connections built across our diverse community.
